How could they take any legal action by you opening it front of them? They chose to sell it. What you do with it after that is your business. I mean you certainly can sue someone for anything in this country but that doesn't mean they actually have a case.

Truth be told I don't know much about the legal system in the USA, but I can imagine a legal/media war emerging. By all logic, yes. It's yours, they sold it, you opened it, that's that. However in a country where you can try to rob somebody, fall through their skylight then sue them because you landed on their knife...I wouldn't take chances. There could be a suit because you knew about the value/possible value and still took it for cheap. I'm not sure what the charge is called but I seem to think it's a thing. Anybody in their right mind would rule it correctly, but people like that are increasingly hard to find.
