There were there college students selling some old MTG stuff the other day at our fair. There was one starter of beta. No crap. This guy hadn't opened it yet. I asked him how much. He, seeing that it was partially damaged said: $40. I said deal. Me and my friends open it in fromnt of them. I see a card with a brown frane at the back. It's an artifact. I check the rest, mostly lands and I got a Dark Ritual. I check the back and thre was a Mox Saphire at the very back of the pack. I can die happy now.

Honestly, you should have kept it sealed. You can get a lot more on average if you sell it sealed than if you open it. Think of it this way: sell it sealed for a guaranteed $2-4000 ( www.trolland...../p80116.html ) or you could open it and get anything from $0-10000. Honestly, even by opening it (assuming the starter and Sapphire are both mint) you only broke even ( sales.starci.....roduct=16973 )

Define "broke even". I see it as he's up thousands of dollars.

Yep

This isn't the first time I've heard an old wives tale from this person.

I would like a pic of the seller when he came home and started googling because he was curious why you were soo happy.

Okay, the value when he opened it is equal to the value now, that's what I mean by "broke even." If he would have opened it and pulled crap, he could have lost money.

But would he have gotten that much money guaranteed? He said the package was damaged. That might put a dent in the final price for the sealed product.
