Mono black zombies is really good. It's a vicious deck to try and race against.

Really hard to say "this deck" for you when so much depends on your play style. Black zombies are good for aggression. So are vampires. If you prefer to play control, blue has tons of options for that, from denial to mill. White also has control with life gain, and aggression with weenies. Giggity. Red is great with goblins for aggressions and RDW for burn. Green has mana ramp for fatties and elves for a more aggressive style.

Probably not as potent as legacy, but I don't see why either couldn't be made into a very competitive deck in modern.

The reason I ask is there is a friendly kitchen table tournament i have been invited to, I only got back into Mtg when my son showed interest. We started playing just after Dark Accension so much of what is allowed in modern eludes me.
I have hardly any cards from sets between ice age and innistrad...
The only restriction on our kitchen table tourney is the deck has to be mono color, we can ignore the banned and restricted list.

I figure I would post this question to the community. I appreciate any and all advice.

Mono-white humans is decent and fun. Mono-blue delver is a possibility with all of mtg oppenend up to you. However I think that mono-red Blitz is the best.
