Exile {misthollow griffin} with {Semblence Anvil}. Can you cast the griffin and retain the (2) mana discount? The card itself doesn't say it requires the card to remain exiled.

Sorry, this doesn't work. If a card imprinted on a permanent changes zones (exile to battlefield in this example) the permanent loses track of it. Same if you {Death Wish} a card you imprinted on an {Isocron Sceptor}.

For some uses for the Griffin, check BJT43 in Articles.  There's one or two applications. 😏
