Sorry! Not sure if I posted this right! Anyway, haven't played a tourney in years and years. The original Kamigawa block was the last time. >.< Trying to find a nice, semi-casual tourney deck. Don't have a big budget but have great trade fodder. I need to shave 8 cards off this, too. Suggestions?

What format are your tournaments?

Dovie

They'll be Modern for now.

For starters, I'm thinking some more ramp wouldn't hurt,  (is and really, replace the {gruul guildgates}. Depending how budget you go, there are better options:
- checkland: {Rootbound Crag}
- pain land: {Karplusan Forest}
- gainland? From Tarkir: {Rugged Highlands}
- temple:  {Temple of Abandon}

All of these are better then the gates, though the temple won't do too much for you in this deck.

While talking lands:  {Kessig Wolf Run} or  {Skarrg, the Rage Pits} give a boost + trample. Especially Kessig seems a nice sink once you ramped into your fatties.

There are those more at home in competitive modern who can give some more tips, but this would get you started.
For ramp for example: are {Frenzied Tilling} &  {Mwonvuli Acid-Moss} any good for competitive modern ramp?

Awesome. I'm smashing two fun decks together and one had four Pits in it so I'll add those back in. And I love Rugged Highlands so I'll see if I can find those. I also have Sylvan Scryings I can add if needed.

I know it's not highly competitive right now, but I'm one of those "get the feel of the game again" kind of players. They've added so much in recent years that I still haven't figured out. Like Planeswalkers. Ugh.

Planeswalkers take some getting used to, but once you understand how to interact with them, they can add a lot of dynamics.
I get the getting back into the game. I myself took a break during the Urza block, only to get back during the Inistrad block.
Be advised that Modern can be a brutal format. Fast & competitive. Not turn 1 kills fast, but some decks can actually win out of nowhere.

Remember to have fun, and don't be intimidated.

(On that note: consider {Krosan grip}, it's a sideboard staple to help out vs {splinter twin}.

Thanks! I'm going to rework it right now and will post an updated list in a bit. :)
