If i have {Regeneration} on {Kresh the Bloodbraided} and he is a 17/17, will his counters stay on him if he "dies"? since it says tap and remove from combat?

Or will he lose them and become a 3/3 again?

He doesn't ever change zones, so won't lose his counters.
