So, as you may know, modern can be an expensive format. So I was wondering if anyone knew of any budget decks that total to be in the $30-$40 range.

Second cheapest deck that is somewhat competive is Life of norin AKA norin sisters. This deck is mildly cheap. It is tier 2 or 3. It runs shock lands so it is a bit more then $40 but it is pretty budget for modern.

Primalcrux green is a little under 100 dollars and mono green infect minus Pendlehaven and injmoth isn't actually that expensive

Codester1991

Mono green infect is like 30 bucks and very competitive

So I guess I should note that it doesn't need to be super competitive. Just something that is fun but could still put up a fight against a very budget delver.

Spencer Addington

Mono white tokens are awesome!

obstinatebaloth

All of the options listed so far are great and super cheap.

Rakdos Hulk combo isn't too expensive

I have Rakdos hulk combo on here and Grixis hulk combo. Grixis is more consistent but Rakdos is cheaper. They are the decks I bring to every modern FNM. I'll bump the lists for you

You can build mono black 8 rack for around $40. You just use spot removal like {victim of night} or {doom blade} instead of {ensnaring bridge} and {blackmail} instead of {thoughtseize} and {duress} instead of {inquisition of kozilek} and {necrogen mists} instead of {liliana of the veil}. There are also a couple of creatures you can experiment with such as {nezumi shortfang} and {nyxathid} and {liliana's specter} with {liliana's caress} and there's a one or two drop black creature with an upkeep trigger that I forget the name of at the moment. Its not super competitive but its heaps of fun to play. Its how I started out in modern before i accumulated the more expensive cards and then splashed white for {path to exile} and {disenchant} and {leyline of sanctity} in the sideboard.

My man 8 rack needs the expensive cards just to be relevant.......

I never said it was competitive. Just that it is a great starting point and heaps of fun to play. And for an unprepared meta it actually can be semi competitive for a time. Then you focus on learning your deck and its interactions involving its main cards so when you finally do upgrade and splash a second colour you already know a lot of its intricacies. And this is a deck that costs hundreds of dollars instead of thousands and is not super complicated so it is a fine option for entry to modern. I can say this from experience. Give it a go before you judge!
