Guys, I really need some help right, I'm not asking for anything, I'm just in really a hard place and need to vent. We moved back into our old house today (the person who was buying decided after 8 months that they couldn't afford it). Well since we had no room for the furniture we left it in the house as part of the deal with them purchasing the house. When we walked in, everything, literally everything was gone. She took all the beds, couches, everything. When confronted she said it was her right to take the furniture. This is really upsetting me as she was one of our friends we helped as much as possible, and she does this to us, leaving my family with nothing. It really sucks and I have no idea what to do. Any thoughts? (anything will help)

Legally cause she backed out you should be able to at least get the value of furniture that was stolen. Get a lawyer

I wish we could, but  she is already in debt and a lawsuit would put us without furniture if we had to wait for her to return it, which isn't real possible either.

Unfortunately we are outside of jurisdiction, so only state police can respond, and they wouldn't be bothered.

Sucks then, guess your screwed if you can't sue for property or get the police involved not much else you can do.

I'm lost, why can't you sue her?

He could, but shes in debt, so it would accomplish nothing.

Agrus Kos, Enforcer of Truth

The threat of prosecution should be enough to return the furniture, if not actually call the police, if the total value of the furniture is enough, the crime is grand larceny and is a felony in some states (other states only recognize larceny, and  between petty and grand). You are correct that a civil suite probably won't accomplish anything, but 99% of people will cave when charged with a felony

Why not call her and ask why the furniture is gone?

Also: did you have a bank present the deal or was it on scouts honor?

Bank was present, and she said because she paid 8,000 and doesn't get to keep it, that the furniture is the least we could do for her

So where ever you were living for 8 months you had no furniture?

And state police will totally bother with theft of a few thousand dollars - and you don't have anything between municipal police and the state level?  No county sheriffs/constables?

What's this about? Also, maybe she owes you something for dropping out on  a deal after 8 months... That argument doesn't make too much sense.

Sounds like she might have some bigger probs, I understand you don't want to take her down more, but if she doesn't respond you may have to accept your losses :(

the_intelligentleman

Don't feel sorry for her. Tell the state police she stole all of your furniture.
