Well there's a couple different things that go into the combat step. The most basic way to explain it is the way you said it when a creature has the same or higher power then another creature's toughness then the lower toughness creature will die. If however you have a  {Grizzly Bears} Attacking and your opponent has a   {Grizzly Bears} Blocking then both Bears will deal two damage to each other cause both to die.

Other combat modifiers are lifelink, flying, death touch, first strike, double strike, and vigilance.
Life link is simple how ever much damage a creature with life link deals you gain that much life. So if  {Vampire Nighthawk} Deals two damage to a creature you will gain two life.
As you see  {Vampire Nighthawk} Also has flying. Flying dictates how a creature can block or which creatures can block. A flying creature can only be blocked by creatures with flying or reach while a creature with flying can block any creature unless otherwise specified. So for example if you attack with the  {Vampire Nighthawk} and your opponent has a  {Grizzly Bears} the bear cannot block the vampire so it will deal two damage to the opponent and you'd gain two life.
The vampire also has death touch which means that any creatures dealt damage by it will die as long as it deals at least one point of damage. So for example if your opponent attacks you with   {Pillarfield Ox} And you block with the vampire the ox will deal two damage to the vampire and the vampire will deal two damage to the ox. Normally both creatures will survive but because vampire has death touch the ox will die unless other effects take place.
First strike cause a creature to deal damage before normal damage is deal. So for instance if you have  {Boros Recruit} Attacking and you opponent blocks   {Elvish Mystic} The recruit's damage will be dear before mystic's damage cause the mystic to die before it dealt the damage and the recruit to survive. Double strike has the same idea but a creature with double strike will deal both first strike and normal damage. Example if you attack with  {Grizzly Bears} And your opponent blocks with  {Fencing Ace} The ace will deal 1 damage with first strike and then the grizzly will deal two damage to ace and ace will deal an addition 1 damage to the bear causing both to die.
Vigilance is the easiest if all of them. When a normal creature attacks it must be tapped to declare and attack. If however a  {Serra Angel} Or another creative with vig attacks it will stay untapped.

Sorry about the long post but there are sooooooo many different things for combat that I can write 4 more posts this long and there still would be more  to write. The easiest thing would be to go play some magic with friends or at a local FNM and ask loooots of questions. Everyone will gladly help you because everyone knows someone has to start somewhere!

Also if I remember all fat packs and deck builder toolkits come with a very good instruction manual that explains lots of the basics. Ironically I also learn a lot in terms of when I can cast a spell and blocking from the magic video games you can find on steam, Xbox or playstation
