has anyone tried to build a commander deck around {Ulamog, The Infinite Gyre} and if so can I have some ideas? What lands, spells, creatures to use. I'm new to commander

You are going to want lots of colorless mana ramp like {everflowing chalice}, {palladium myr}, {sol ring}, tron lands, etc.  Here is a good place to start http://edhrec.com/recommendations?q=Ulamog,%20the%20Infinite%20Gyre

Remember you can't use Basics, only lands that produce colorless. That said, between land and rocks, it shouldn't be too hard

But isn't there a rule that if something produce colored mana if it's not a color of your commander it produces colorless mana.  Or something to that effect.  Would that include basic lands?

I'm pretty certain that goes for things such as {prophetic prism} since the card is colorless it's playable and although it would produce any color it would have to be colorless. A card such as {Elvish mystic} being green and producing a green mana wouldn't be playable because it's initially a green card. Therefore lands that are out of flavor wouldn't be playable even basic lands.. But that's my understanding. And I do understand you know that elvish mystic would be illegal I was just using it as an example

That's the reason this deck is so expensive. You can't have any basics. Getting all the lands you need is pricey
Yep, my buddy built {Karn, Silver Golem} and when thumbing through his deck, the manabase was almost the most expensive part lol.

But wait dont basics technically count as colorless they just produce certain mana which in that deck would just make colorless

903.5d: A card with a basic land type may be included in a Commander deck only if each color of mana it could produce is included in the commander's color identity.
Example: {Wort, the Raidmother}'s color identity is red and green. A Wort Commander deck may include land cards with the basic land types Mountain and/or Forest. It can't include any land cards with the basic land types Plains, Island, or Swamp.

Ok thank you for that clarification.

It's really dumb that they have the rule that you can't produce mana out of your color and you can't have lands that produce out of color. Don't need both rules.

{Command tower} produces off color. I think it is that Basic Lands have the text
Tap: to produce {w}/{u}/{b}/{r}/{g}
Implied, as it was written out in the old lands.
