Situation: Opponent has a {Sagu Mauler} on the board. I have a {Heliod's Pilgrim} out.

He swings with {Sagu Mauler}, I block with {Heliod's Pilgrim}.

I cast {God's Willing} selecting green.

He says that doesn't work because {Sagu Mauler} is also blue. I dig through the rules and cite this ruling as reference,

702.15e Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.

He said that "I just found out that it would override. So blue would take over the card then."

I said "This (what I said) is from the official rules. If you really want I can get people to back me up but I'd just like to get on with the game."

Then he quit.

So the question is, was I horribly wrong or was I playing against somebody that doesn't have a clear grasp on the rules/was trying to cheat? The weird thing is that he was kicking my butt as far as the game goes.

Keep in mind that he could still only assign 1 damage to the pilgrim and then trample the rest over.

Nice catch.

He'd have to assign 2, the ruling specifies lethal.

702.19b: The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking.

Example: A 6/6 green creature with trample is blocked by a 2/2 creature with protection from green. The attacking creature's controller must assign at least 2 damage to the blocker, even though that damage will be prevented by the blocker's protection ability.

Why he quit if he have mauler out and you're not running cracking doom????

Mauler is OP once it hits the floor

Min of 2 damage
Assigned damage must be = lethal
Protection will save the creature in this case
Only with death touch and trample is it a case of assign one and go
I'm pretty positive 2 is still considered lethal even though it's doesn't kill the creature.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't he have to play {God's Willing} on his creature BEFORE declaring blockers?

No. But before damage

So if you swing with 2/2. I declare my blockers a 5/5. In response before combat I can {God's Willing} to keep mine alive? Does that damage go through?

Yes you will keep your 2/2 alive. But he is already blocked so no damage will go thru. Unless you can pump him up (6 or better) and give him trample.

To keep him from being able to be blocked you would have to cast that before he is declared blocked.

Even though all damage is prevented, there's still an amount that is considered lethal?

Yes.
Assign Damage - 2 to creature, 4 tramples over.
Then damage is prevented.

Since the damage isn't prevented until after all damage is assigned, you assign lethal even though it never is.

Ahh makes sense. Wow I gave up a few games because of that for sure! Thank you

Thanks guys, thought he was BSing me. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't accidentally BSing him.

Also, I thought about the trample but with his reaction I wasn't about to tell him about it.
