I'm a highschool student going into his junior year. And this is the year, in our highschool, to get our life in order. They want your tests done, resumès shipped out, and your major chosen ( its very serious at our highschool)

So I like most people my age don't know what to be intrested to have a career in.

So I thought Lawyer! Does anyone have any experience? Tips, tricks? Suggestions? On how to become a lawyer.

How much do you like essay writing? I have taken some of the prerequisites to getting into our School of Law at my university. I had five 10 page essays due all at the end of semester, and a 2 page essay due every week in my Constitutional Analysis class... And it's nice to remember that most people change their major at least once in college. :)

As for essays, I don't mind them as much as other people :)
I have a broad idea of social science, that's just what I like, I've done countless History classes(Honors and AP). It's just the school (who I don't think cares about us) wants us to be so ready to go!
And I don't know where "go" is...

I like to debate, I like to speak (Even though at the time of the speech, I'm nervous as can be, but somehow natural instinct takes over and gets me A+) I like to see how things work(psychologically). I just don't know what these skills file me under as a career

This made me lol. Get some of your own life experience before you start to give it out. If you haven't lived on your own supporting yourself you haven't started life.

Not trying to attack you so I hope it's not sounding that way.

It doesn't take life experience to know that someone who likes working with his hands would probably make a good mechanic.

Not really. I have a friend who is great with his hands and enjoy working on cars. But they are not mechanically inclined so he works on IT. He can run lines from one place to another, but take anything apart and he gets lost.

Again all I'm trying to say is enjoy life. Live a little and get some experience before you start giving it.

The most important thing to remember about law schools is that you don't have to have a specific degree to get into a law school. You technically can get a degree in puppeteering and a law school could take you. That being said, use your first four years to do something you like, that will be relevant in your law career. For example, I (a senior this year) am going to major in some sort of business, economics, or finance, so that I will be better prepared for a career in corporate law. One lawyer I talked to suggested a History degree.

That's intresting, I was going to go to collegue, and major in history for a start.
So I can decide at that point if I want to go to law school.
Thanks for the info!

I was told that there are to many lawyers in the last few years, that it's a tough field to find a good job in these days. I would do your research and talk to some fresh out of law school kids.

That's true, but if he is a junior, he won't be graduating from law school for another 9 years. A lot can change in that time. Also, if he goes to a four year school for business or something, if things are still bad when he graduates from the 4 year school, he doesn't have to go to a law school.

You don't have to live a little and get some experience to give out advice. A wise man learns from the experience of others, and most people's definition of live a little doesn't interest me at all.

I have never really been in a serious romantic relationship, yet my friends come to me for relationship advice (and keep coming back.) You don't have to go skydiving or be afraid of heights to know that that's probably not a good combination.

I have learnt more from observation and other people than from life experience. Don't discredit somebody just because they haven't been there, they're still trying to be helpful.

That being said of course somebody that has been to law school will have advise that none of us do. Doesn't make anyone else's advice invalid.

Living on your own is not "truely living". It doesn't make you all knowing. It's not a right of passage that unlocks all knowledge. Please get off the high horse.

Now, to the topic at hand. I'm in a similar situation. I don't know what career I want to pursue, and I'm being pressured towards making a decision. (Being in grade 12 I'm probably getting more pressure than you). You know that being a lawyer is something you might enjoy. Do it, you have years to decide you want to change, or years that will provide a valuable head start if you stay on that career path.

I personally want to pursue writing (fiction). However, that's not a practical career option. It's a hard field to get into if you want a consistent writing job, like working for a magazine. Writing a novel (what I truely want to do) is years of work that tends to pay very little, if you can even get through the gauntlet of publishing. You have the option of pursuing a high paying career that you might enjoy. You've got nothing to lose.

Both my parents are lawyers and my dad is the head lawyer for a oil and gas company But he keeps saying that they need more lawyers and that they need more qualified people.  So in my opinion if you have a good degree and you can present your self well that there are plenty of law jobs available

Also, going to law school doesn't mean you have to become a lawyer. Lots of law school grads go to work in business, non profit, teaching, etc.
