Early Karma

I was thinking about how hard it is for newcomers on their karma, and a lot of them simply get negative because they're new. Here's an idea to stop that


I think once a new person is on the forums, for the first 10-50 comments (whichever you prefer), no one can touch their karma. Then, after that until 100, they should get "Warnings". It won't affect their karma but then they know what's unacceptable. Then after that they should have learned better and their karma can become whatever it wants depending on their attitude/actions.


Or something like that. Personally when I was new I got negatives for no apparent reason. I think this idea could be refined and it would keep newcomers around, instead of just leaving.

And that means more people, which means more paying customers. What do you say Piotr?

I see karma go up and down, user vindictive karma and I also see opinions voiced through negative karma.

I've negged people and plus'd people; depending on what they write.

This is the Internet; it is real life and in real life: people will not always agree or like you. What you say on it can be dug up years after you've forgotten.

Many a time before I neg or reply, I take a second to think if its worth it. Usually I do peg ignorance as many people are becoming lazy and do not bother to verify or check before posting misinformation or something that was mentioned a few pages into a thread.

Or get rid of karma, it doesn't serve it's purpose. At all.

People do not pay for the server.

They don't pay for the server, but the pay for additional little stuffs, and if they leave, who pays? Just a thought I guess . I'm tired of seeing new comers picked on.. But okay

I pay iMtG is just a hobby anyway, I'm back doing SAP consultancy as my day job.

Could you give me a couple of examples of newcomers who are being picked on, please?

It happened to me once. Once. Then I got over it, somebody noticed it and evened it out. Honestly, I think that the newcomers learn based on the karma they lose. If we prevent then from seeing that their comments are disliked, how will they learn what not to post?

What's so wrong with me standing up for the little guy? Why is everyone just like "life isn't fair". Life isn't fair because jerk comments like that exist. What happened to basic compassion and empathy? The world doesn't have that and people are just out for themselves

This is the reason I want to kill myself. No one cares about anyone. We just think about how to make our day better, by putting others down and calling them a "wuss". What? They are hurt when people insult them? Gosh, that's such a weird concept. They must be the fucked up ones.

I wish people could see this kind of thinking matters more than they think.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

In the grand scheme of life, your karma on imtg means nothing.  If you get upset by the negs, don't say the types of things that got you those negs.  Everyone dealt with it when the joined, so he should be able to deal with it also.


If you really do feel life is fair, then answer this.  Why did my birth mom break up with my birth dad, make him give me up, overdose on drugs and die before I even got to see her once?  Life isn't fair.

You talk a good game about things not to bother you. Yes karma shouldn't, but it does to some people. Remember the hissy fit you threw when I posted and stickied the recent top 8 decks. You started calling names and stuff. That shouldn't have bothered you in the whole scheme of life.

Yes it's easy to say stuff like karma doesn't bother you when your sitting at a high number.

Sorry to hear about your mom. But do you know what everyone else went thru. Yes life isn't fair but do we have to make it harder on everyone. We are trying to be a community. So just because I had to deal with it doesn't mean everyone else has to. We can make things better.

That didn't involve karma.  It was completely in appropriate for me to get that upset, I posted without thinking, so I apologized and fixed it.  I personally don't see how that and karma connect.

It didn't really bother me when I was low.  I saw what made me go lower and avoided it.  No big deal.  Why unnecessarily baby people.

I appreciate how you handled it in the end. And I just brought it up because I'm sure it brought out feelings inside of you. The way these two are similar (this is my opinion ) is that it is stuff that happens on the internet. Which you say shouldn't bother them and I say shouldn't bother you. Everyone has their opinions but sometimes this could discourage a new member. My suggestion is to before being so quick with the neg stick is to look at the person. If they are new may try to suggest something first ( kind of like a mentor). Being new and not know how things are can be a lot to handle.
