5th Gen Pokemon

I know you hate them. There're stupid, based on everything from gears to ice cream, and have no originality whatsoever.
However there is 1 new Pokemon you can't hate on
Why is this?
I don't think it's new at all.
I'm talking about Genesect, anew legendary Pokemon from gen. 5. It was supposedly modified by team Plasma, turning into the cannon-toting Pokemon we know and hate. BUT! Was Genesect an existing Pokemon, or was A different Pokemon modified into Genesect? I say: door #2. Why? Look at Genesect. What does it remind you of.

WTF?"
Now, look at the text. Genesect lived 300,000,000 years ago. One of Kabutops' texts states that it lived during the same time!
My Hypothesis:
Finding fossils of Kabutops, team plasma brought them back, and not knowing what a Kabutops was (it didn't live in the Unova Region[someone brought a fossil there]), named it Genesect, and put an exoskeleton on it!
