Hello!

I know this is a very vague question but I am trying to mass out my collection atm (I only have a couple hundred cards) and I was thinking of buying a 36 bosster box.

I myself am in love with black and am trying to build a black/blue or a black/green deck at the moment. (Suggestions to other colour combo's are welcome.).

Anywho, the question I have is which one should I get? The 2014 Core Set, Dragons Maze, Theros or Born of the Gods?

Thank you for your time <3

(Again, my apologies for the vague question, but am thankful for what feedback I can get.).

Uhh I think you should move this to the discussions forum... Although the 2014 Core Set/Theros is nice. But you might wanna try saving up on the older boxes/the new modern masters print.

The question is: what are you trying to do with your collection:

I collect each set and binder it before I play with the cards of the set

I recommend buying a box of whatever set, keep in mind that if you intend to play with the card pool from the box, you may want to consider buying Theros or Born of the Gods since the other sets available will rotate out this coming fall.

Or

If you're making decks, use this app or another deck building app, create preferred deck, buy cards. It can cost a lot less than buying a box or two hoping to get your needed list.

Be careful with born of the gods. The set is tiny and you end of with play sets of every common.

Just a suggestion maybe look at an event deck. The BotG one is black. Looks interesting I will be picking two up in the near future.

Google event decks just to check some out.

MuggyWuggy

BoG event decks are sold out at my LGS - they also have em cheaper than other places (25 not 30)

I recommend older sets also unless you want to stay with standard play?

If you're going to shell out for a booster box I think it's more worth your while to get 4x complete common and uncommon sets on ebay and use the other 70 or so dollars to buy a couple killer rares.

If you're only standard play, Return to Ravnica seems to have the best value still, even though {Deathrite Shaman} is at half price due to his recent ban in the Modern Format. Here's a break down.

Return to Ravnica:

{Steam Vents}, {Overgrown Tomb}, {Blood Crypt}, {Hallowed Fountain}, {Temple Garden}. All should be around $10 for their extended value in any format . {Sphinx's Revelation} is played in standard, but some modern USA builds still run 1 or 2 I believe. Probably $10 after rotation. {Deathrite Shaman} is also $10, but I forsee them unbanning him in a few years, just like {Bitterblossom}, causing his price to go to $30+. {Jace Architect of Thought} and {Vraska the Unseen} are both going to drop. Not just for the reprints in Jace vs Vraska, but also because they are not played in other formats besides EDH. Because Jace is Jace, I forsee $7-$9 after rotation. {Vraska the unseen} will be about $4. There's also {Desecration Demon}, but he will drop back to $1 post rotation. Also {Abrupt Decay}, easily $20 post rotation for Legacy BUG.

Gatecrash: Has the other 5 shocklands, {Sacred Foundry}, {Watery Grave}, {Stomping Ground}, {Godless Shrine}, {Breeding Pool}. Now, Gatecrash was notorious for their shocklands being at a lower printing rate. That means you have a less chance of pulling them. Plus, Return to Ravnica has 2/3 of the USA shocklands, the top 8 modern deck currently. But, Gatecrash does have 2/3 of the shocklands for Jund, which if {Deathrite Shaman} gets unbanned, will become very good again. Thing is, DRS is still in Return to Ravnica, so if he did become unbanned, it would still be better to buy RTR. GTC also has {Obzedat Ghost Council}, at $7. There's {Boros Reckoner}, anywhere from $10-$20, depending on the month. Neither of these have extended value. That's all I see in GTC.

Dragonsmaze: All that's here is {Voice of Resurgence} and {Blood Baron of Vizkopa}. Yes, all 10 shocklands are printed in this one, BUT, has the least success rate in pulling them! RTR you get 3-4 per box. DGM you get 0-2. Voice holds extended value at $10ish, not %100 sure there, and Blood Baron will drop to $5-$10.

M14: {Scavenging Ooze} has $20-$30 value post rotation, as does {Archangel of Thune}. Still not a reliable set.

Theros: I see nothing in this set that will hold value when it leaves.

Born of the Gods: {Brimaz, King of Oreskos} holds Legacy value at $5-$10.

Honestly, no set right now has the worth to buy a box. The only set I can think of that's worth it's price is Innistrad. (Hello {Snapcaster Mage}, {Geist of Saint Traft}, and {Liliana of the Veil}. {Delver of Secrets} is dirt cheap, but still viable in every single format.)

But 100%, DONT BUY BOXES. Buy what you need! Buying a box is awful. You'll spend $100+ and get $40 of cards at most. Just buy the really good cards from each set and you won't be wasting your money ;)

Above is about the best breakdown of values that I have seen.

I do have to say there is a certain joy in cracking packs though when doing a draft or such with friends.

If it is standard I would buy Ravnica.  Has the best value and is s available at a fair price.

Innistrad will climb in price and is not standard legal if that matters to you.

particle

i agree except you forgot {mutavault} for m14.

MuggyWuggy

{Kalonian hydra} ain't bad either

Much better than past hydra mythics IMO

DylanW18

Yeah, {Mutavault} I forgot about, $40 post rotation probably. As for {Kalonian Hydra}, he will only see EDH play. $6-$7. Like {Primordial Hydra}

If you are just getting started and want to build a usable card pool, I'd suggest buying from the core sets.  These cards are made specifically for newer style players using the standard mechanics.  They also include reprints of useful cards from previous sets.

Buying the deck builders toolkit would also be a good place to start.
