There is something called box mapping where you can pull out specific booster packs from a box, and those boosters have the most expensive cards in them. tl;dr: Don't buy loose booster packs from any set before Scars - chances are the box has been mapped for all the good rares and the rest are junk.

Box mapping I'm like 90 percent is true. I remember even seeing diagrams and graphs somewhere on the net. Plus is reasonable that if you know the order in which cards are printed on a sheet, you could reasonably "map" a box by opening a few packs. Though I think you need a case to do it most effectively. Plausible
