Putting this sweet piece of work together what do you guys think?

Hermit Druid combo is broken, why had I never heard of it before, and more importantly why isn't it seeing played?

Shadridium

I think the prime reason it doesn't see play is because its a competive deck in a casual format.

That's true for sure but starting January we're going to start competitive EDH tourneys and I'm just trying to get a feel of what's the best of the best out there (while at the same time not digging too deep into my pocket). Don't know how cutthroat it's going to be.

Ok so here's my assessment of the version he's running, (feel free to correct me) he will get out hermit aNd mill his deck, sac creatures to flashback dread return on angel of glories rise, then with azami and lab maniac in play he will tap either to draw and trigger lab maniacs abilitiy.

Probably because there are so many broken combos for this format:)

Isn't hermit Druid banned in edh because of this?

Okay okay, this thread brought me out of lurking mode...

The above explanations aren't really hermit Druid combo...

For those that haven't had the combo explained, a quick primer (of a version that swept a 1v1 EDH tournament).

Simple Version:

Scion of the Ur-Dragon (General)
Necrotic Ooze (in play)
Morselhoarder (in graveyard)
Devoted Druid (in graveyard)
Shivan Hellkite (in library or graveyard)

With Morselhoarder and Devoted Druid in the graveyard, resolve Necrotic Ooze. Use Morselhoarder and Devoted Druid to get infinite (arbitrary large) amounts of all colors of mana. Cast Scion, turn it into Shivan Hellkite, then ping everyone to death. Note that once Necrotic Ooze resolves, very few cards stop this combo (Timestop, Hinder, Spell Crumple). Graveyard disruption, instant or split second removal, or counterspells do nothing once Necrotic Ooze resolves.

There are lots of other versions. For example, if you have Shivan Hellkite in the graveyard too, you can win through tuck spells and keep priority until billions of damage are on the stack, then combo again if you want. This wins through all of the above answers, and only very obscure multi-card combinations will beat it.

Hermit Druid can set up this win with the following:
Hermit Druid
Dread Return
Fatestealer
Narcomoeba

Hermit Druid empties the library into the graveyard, getting Narcomoeba and Fatestealer (for U), which all get sacrificed (along with Hermit Druid) to Dread Return to get Necrotic Ooze, which wins with the above combo.

I'll note that I don't really think banning Hermit Druid stops this deck, as Survival + Creature + GGG = Necrotic Ooze combo, so you are back to effectively a one card combo.

There are even GB versions that just involve swapping a couple cards from your otherwise innocuous Saproling deck so that you win when you play Survival [for the record, Viscid Lemures, Necrotic Ooze, Triskelion, Phyrexian Devourer]. You don't have to "base your deck around it". You just throw those cards in and you have an easy table win if you draw Survival. Compare this to Protean Hulk.(which is banned)

For those stating that these combo decks can be halted with disruption: Hermit Druid combo is beating 1v1 decks like Grand Arbiter Augustin IV. GAAIV plays only counterspells, creature kill, graveyard hosers, and card draw. At any given time, a 1v1 GAAIV deck has more disruption than a table full of all but the most crazy EDH players.

If you did want to shut down these shenanigans, AND you wanted to keep Survival (an EDH favorite), you would probably have to ban both Ooze and Hermit Druid.
