So I'm not what you'd call a habitual smoker (weed), I partake once in a very blue moon if I'm really stressed out, and this past Sunday this was the case.
With everything going on in my life I can't find the time to calm down, and it was nice to finally relax. However as is the case in my life everything has to go wrong. After not smoking for a good 7 months prior to this, last night my work decided it was time for the random drug test they occasionally do. One person out of all the stores gets picked, and of course it's me.
So now the great wait begins. From past experience during the hiring process here it took 3-4 days for them to finish the test. It's a mouth swab test, and I hear they can be effective anywhere from 12-72 hours in its reading.
I'm not looking for pity, I knew the reprocutions when I made my actions, I just feel like I ruined my life. So yeah, end rant I suppose.

Is it a big company you work for? Do people get fired right away for failing a drug test? A friend of mine worked for Walgreen's and failed a drug test. They gave him the option of taking "rehab classes" which lead to him keeping his job.

Nash finch/spartan foods, largest food retailing company's in the Midwest. Auto termination I'm afraid.

This is when I shake my head at America's drug policy

You were trying to unwind, not bothering anyone, with a pacifying and enjoyable substance. You're clearly a menace to society.

Thankfully, the recent past seems to indicate that the stigma on marijuana is getting a little blurrier. This won't keep you from finding another job, man. You may want to start looking for one now though.

No, the tests are done by people, not machines. Documents can not appear even when they should, and so on.

I know this will not help, but if you ever get a random drug test and know your gonna fail you should turn in your resignation. It's better to have quit a job for no reason then to be fired for failing a drug test. When you quit do not mention the drug test for a reason just say your not ...........(fill in the blank with som random reason) and it is effective imeteatly.

But, some places offer a one strike policy. If you know your gonna fail. Before you take the random drug test admit you have a problem (that's what they want to hear) and you need help. They will make you take some drug treatment course, but you can keep your job.

That sucks man. I hate America's drug policy. Don't let this event stress you out even more, or make you quit smoking. Use it as an opportunity to further yourself.

I keep my temple clean, so I don't have much advice to give, but I'm sorry for what you are going through and I wish you a speedy route to a new job if you lose this one. :(

Your fine man. Mouth swab tests yield the worst results. When I got hired in I had to take the same test...the day after I smoked and at the time I smoked a lot. I passed no problem. So, don't fret too much man. The less you smoke the better chances you have of passing as the THC stores in fat cells, it may also depend on your size.

MuggyWuggy

They swab your mouth? That's arguably a bit intrusive IMO for a job. They want a hair sample next?

The amount of restrictions enforced by companies that severely under pay their workers is absurd.

Steerpike

Let us know what the results are, assuming there's a chance they come up negative

I've got a good 2-3 days before results. I trust my department manager a lot, I'm going to ask him what I should do tomorrow. I almost don't think the test was random, because the assistant store manager dislikes me and he's the one who told me I had too.
I'm just upset because I had a nice chance here. Things are stressful but my manager asked me my 3rd month in if I wanted to take deli manager training. I'm right in the middle if it and this just screws everything. My fault though. Thanks for the support guys, you are all great.

Small update: after speaking to my boss/manager I'm slightly less worried. They sometimes offer "rehabilitation" classes, and he said with pot it's the likely option theyed choose if it came back positive. Other then that he says he feels for me, and told me not to stress too bad, as what happens happens.

Depending on your good standing with the company and any seniority you have, if that is an option, i hope it gets offered to you.
It's a great feeling when a fair part of the anxiety can be given hope :)
