There's lots of junk rares in any big set, isn't there?

Let me re-phrase......there's not a lot of good rares in this set.  {temporal mastery} and {vexing devil} being the star players IMO.  The PWs are just meh.....

{Vexing Devil} is solid.  I think {Temporal Mastery} is getting a little over-hyped IMHO.  Like Sorin, LoI.  I DO think there are some good cards this go round, and I think if people can make it past early-game aggro, that some of these high CMC cards are going to be relevant.

I'd also like to try {Griselbrand} with {Heartless Summoning} and cheap stuff.

I think outside standard use, lots of great edh cards and themed casual decks

Clearmario

I just realized that with AVR, the power level is crazy. For R/B/U Aggro
T1 {vexing devil} 4/3
T2 {torpor orb}
T3 {treacherous pit-dweller} 4/3 and {faithless looting} *discard 2 creatures
T4 {Skaab ruinator} 5/6 ({vexing devil} + 2 creatures}
T5 {Demonlord of ashmouth} 5/4
This would have to require the perfect hand but it seems quite good

Piotr

I'm puzzled why is everyone so excited about {Vexing Devil}. It's a bloody sorcery which causes 4 damage to target player. So what, I have 16 left and you're a card out :P

Me personally would use it in my burn deck, anything else then yah I'm out a card but 4 damage or a 4/3 creature for just 1 mana is crazy

Piotr

4 damage ONLY to a opponent. It is NEVER a 4/3 creature, unless the creature doesn't make any difference anyway because the opponent has board superiority. It's useless.

Like I was saying though, perfect for a burn deck as a 1st-3rd turn card

Piotr

Well of course, but I'm pretty sure it's useless in RDW outside Standard.

Yah, but for standard it's pretty good :3

Four damage to a player for R is still pretty good for RDW, I think.  I'll leave it up to more knowledgeable players than myself though.

T1 vexxing, take 4. T2 goblin arsonist, goblin grenade. 10 life left after 2 turns? Yeah that's not good.

I do see one issue with {Vexing Devil}, the more the game progresses, the less impact it has.  He's 4 damage early game when your opponent has more life, and a 4/3 when your opponent has drawn into more answers or fatties.  I do appreciate what Piotr's saying, in that it's inconsistent because your opponent can chose the lesser of two evils.

I also think that Standard format is what causes the buzzing.  We Vintage players players are crotchety old folks with insanely high standards.  ;)

Willthomjr

Less imPact as the game goes, to an extent. Strictly speaking of standard of course.

A 4/3 for 1 mana in any circumstance is great! Since when is it a bad thing?

I think the hype is appropriate. Not broken, a huge boost and a staple in a RDW for sure

If your opponent is at 6 life, and can kill you with the creatures on the table, they'll take the 4 damage and you'll wish you had a blocker.

If your opponent has nothing on the table and is looking to stabilize and is sitting at 25 life.  They'll take the damage.

If your opponent is at 2 life, but has a {Doom Blade} in hand, they'll let you have a 4/3.

Exactly, but it's a sure staple in red decks everywhere in standard
