Proxies

I'm just curious how many of you play in a group that allows proxys. If you do, what kinda rules do you have?

Remillo

My group really only plays EDH.  Of the six total members of our group, this is our policy -

The three newest players (we taught them to play last year), who don't have many cards of their own, are allowed to proxy out decks, provided it's something they could reasonably acquire (So, no Duals, etc.). Myself and the two other more experienced players are only allowed to proxy things that we're testing, or high-end, somewhat low-impact cards (Duals, usually), though one of our players has Force of Will and Mana Drain proxied in to a deck, and Forcefield in another.  I have an Eerebos deck that is 70% proxies, because I'm in the process of building it, and the Duals in my Phelddagrif deck are proxied, simply because I took the time to make awesome-looking Foil proxies for them.

There really isn't any harm to it, as long as you aren't trying to play them in tournaments.

I say as long as you are trying to get the cards and you are only using the deck for casual play (not tournaments), proxies are okay. I am also fine with allowing proxies in decks that are just being tested, you don't want to build a $1000 deck just to find out you don't like how it plays and want to rework it or ditch the deck all together.

My playgroup allows proxy anything. It doesn't very much matter if someone cannot afford them or whatever. We want the highest level of competition, and for play testing purposes. I don't play Standard anymore, but our EDH proxy rule is similar.

Some cards are just too expensive. Some are needlessly expensive (like original duals) and don't represent a leap in power. The reserve list is the worst thing ever. And for the record, I'm pleased to report that none of us need to proxy (besides my substitute {Timetwister} for the real one)

No one in my group cares. I personally don't proxy anything, but my friends are free to do whatever they want. It's not like it matters, we aren't playing against each other for our lives or anything.

No proxies in any format other than EDH or casual/deck testing

If your whole deck is using proxies in EDH to an excessive amount, then I start talking .poo. to you as we play.

I constructed my first EDH deck from all original cards and bought them all if I didn't have them. I find it unfair for players like myself who do teh same and then someone shows up with some deck that is all post its in sleeves, you can't even read the rules because it just says: "Surv of fittest" or "D tutor". That's where I say, hey, at least try to get cards close to that ability and sub till you actually get em.

I completely agree with dual lands though, they are incredibly expensive and don't do much other than flex your mana. I have a set of all dual lands proxies and foiled so they look super legit, just aren't real.

Also had a proxied Jace TMS in my counter deck, but the squirrel in me bought a foiled FTV Jace for $84. But that may see play in my modern deck

My friends that proxy their cards print out te cards and put them in sleeves with another card so it's not as bad haha.

I opposed proxies at first but then i just realized it's only because i didn't want to lose the advantage of them having to wait for singles in the mail lol

But actually on a more legitimate note, unless they scanned the image for all the card's characteristics (which, c'mon, of course they didn't), it gets awfully hard to analyze a battlefield (especially in multiplayer) and make the best decisions.

When I proxy I print the entire card art. :p

Steerpike

That's actually super commendable :) my playgroup doesn't

Shadridium

I personally use proxies but I hand make each of them and type everything out in magic card maker. So I like redeem myself I guess.

Proxies don't have to take a lot of time or be terrible...just print them off here: http://magic.bluebones.net/proxies/

Steerpike

Sweet link. I'll pass this on to my group
