Why does {rain of gore} not stop lifelink according to gatherer?

Lifelink is an ability, but it doesn't cause the life gain. The life gain is caused by whatever is the reason for the damage being dealt. If that reason is combat damage, the life gain is not caused by a spell or ability, so Rain of Gore won't affect it. If a source with lifelink deals damage due to a resolving spell or ability, the resulting life gain is affected by Rain of Gore.

Seems quite silly to me. If two creatures deal damage and one has lifelink, how is the lifelink not the thing that is causing the life to be gained. I understand that the damage is also a factor, but the lifegain is a result of lifelink + damage, not just the damage.

I know, its stupid but that's how it works. If I use {Prey Upon} or {Pit Fight} the spell causes the damage and therefore causes the life gain so {Rain of Gore} does work. Its an odd rule and makes {Rain of Gore} only half as useful as it could be but that's how things work.

This is an interesting one.

Thank you. I understand it now with your help and the internet. A website discussing it posted this:
119.3f Damage dealt by a source with lifelink causes that source's controller to gain that much life, in addition to the damage's other results.
Which makes me realize that a creature with lifelink can't gain life at will just cause of lifelink. Something else has to happen for that lifelink to do anything. So even though it is counterintuitive, it seems to work. Appreciate the help.

Wouldn't the {rain of gore} still not care about {prey upon} and {pit fight} since it is fight. If pit fight or prey upon were the ones doing the damage then things like deathtouch, lifelink, and infect wouldn't do anything from those cards. Since all of those effects state that the creature must be the one dealing the damage

According to a Level 2 judge I talked to,  If a source with lifelink deals damage due to a resolving spell or ability, the resulting life gain is affected by {Rain of Gore}.

After a little discussion with two L2s and myself being an L1, we came to the conclusion that Lifelink would still allow to to gain life, even with Pit Fight effects.  Because the lifegain is caused by the Damage, and not directly by the spell or ability, it's gets around Rain of Gore.
