"Oh, I only play standard."

I love modern. I feel like it blends the diversity of casual  and the boundaries of standard and finds a balanced medium of the two .

Edh is just straight up enjoyable. It really seems to emphasize fun over winning and makes net decking a non-issue.

I'm actually pro "I only play standard" to a degree. Casual games especially have been awful in my experience. From fluctuator stupidity to the old fart who thought it fun to crush newbs with essentially a vintage deck, casual decks are where the assholes bend the rules. EDH and modern are fun, but it can be frustrating playing against decks that combo off turn four (Lookin at you Jhoira) and a lot of players just don't have the cards to play modem (reprint the .loving. fetch lands WotC). Standard is the deck most players own and most accessible format, so it's the default..

Sets in standard stay legal for close to a year before rotating out, way more than "a couple months."

And standard isn't that expensive when you consider alone the cost of fetch lands for modern and legacy.

Those two formats have 2-300 dollars in land costs alone (a lot more in most cases) if you want to stay at a competitive level.

Youve made a lot of unsubstantiated comments in there and a wee personal attack. Lolz.

RDW will, but reanimator got boned unless we see a good reanimate in theros, Blitz is keeping some stuff but lost some of its anti-control({Thalia, Guardian of Thraben}) and heavy hitters({Champion of the Parish}). hexproof is losing some of its main creatures, but it is getting some things back. At least Pillow Fort is going to thrive, right?
the third set "journey into nix" might give us some good reanimator stuff. Because isn't Nyx the underworld of this set?

Why limit yourself to one format? Doesn't make sense to me. It's like playing Team Fortress 2 and limiting yourself to playing only as the sniper. Sure, playing sniper is fun, and by playing it exclusively you'll probably get really damn good at it, but at the same time, you're denying yourself of the 8 other ways to have fun. So why limit yourself to one mode of many?

Just my opinion, of course. And sure, there are certainly some reasons to avoid certain formats (like the insane price tag in vintage/legacy), or simply personal preferences drawing you more into one than others. But hey, whatever makes you happy playing magic, I say that's what you do.

Birdbrain

Do you have to have fetches to play standard? Isn't there some other way?

Agrus Kos, Enforcer of Truth

IMO the best thing to do is to play Standard with Modern or Commander. That way when the Shocklands you spent too much on leave standard you can still use them. Also when they reprint stuff (like the RTR Shocklands) you already have it.

If the "hewy" block is zenkidar, I think we'll see the fetch lands again. How many years has it been sense zenkidar? It looks like we're returning to planes every seven years

Edit: aw crap. Hewy is lorwyn

Vampyvyrus

I really liked alot of cards in lorwyn

Lorwyn / Morningtide / Shadowmoor / Eventide had some of the most fun cards in all of mtg history, IMO. It makes me sad that I wasn't around in the mtg world to play them when they were in print, and I'm only able to play with them as treasures of the past.

The moment {Oona, Queen of the Fae} entered standard, THEN I was happy to play Standard and my individuality tribal muscle was flexed to the max!

True, however that isn't what I said, what I meant by what I said is that a set rotates out every couple months

JustAWalrus

My playgroup can play casual because everyone is on a budget and im a huge johnny,
I like standard too because tier one decks are less expensive and i sell stuff thats rotating 3 months before it does as to not lose money.
I mostly make crazy decks like for standard i have my deck switch from Uwr control to RWu agro to confuse my opponents. In legacy im building a deck based off of {dwarven shrine} {shadowborn apostle} and self mill to win with a "strictly unplayable card" but honestly there are different formats for different people and thats why there is more than 1 format.

Mlerner12

I'll play a lot of things, but when I play a format my friends don't tgey'll say "Oh Ill just edit my deck", then put in cards not legal in the format and say "You play what I don't so I should get to play with what I want". It's obnoxious. Also, my FNM gets MUCH less people at anything but standard, mostly modern (MY favorite). So yeah, that's just what I say.
