Planeswalkers

I have a quick question about direct damage. Though you can't directly attack one, with say, a {lightning bolt}, if I could target a player, could I instead have it deal damage to the planeswalker instead? I'm sorta confused.

That's it exactly!  You target the player, and then, if no one stops it, at the last second you can redirect it to a Planeswalker.
