What is the ruling on using the older version on a card that is in standard now. Can you use it or do you have to have the new printed one?

Mikefrompluto

Yes, you may use older cards in standard if they've been reprinted in a standard legal set.

You might be required to use sleeves, as the sheer age of the card might qualify it as a "marked" card if you can tell which one it is in your deck/hand/etc.

Other than that, yep, it's perfectly fine. If they reprint {Fireball} in m14, or {Giant Spider}, you would be allowed to use one from Beta edition in your deck if you so choose. (Just not Alpha, because the cards were actually shaped differently).

Really? I didn't know this.

I was unaware of that myself. I have 6 alpha {Island} in my Merfolk deck, and have never been reminded of that ruling.it sounds interesting, the corners are not drastically different, I wonder what the reason for that would be.

They are legal if played in sleeves that dont have clear backings. You'd have a hard time finding someone who would want to play Alpha cards without sleeves anyway :P

Alpha cards have slightly less rounded corners (or are they more rounded? I forget now), making it possible to pick them out of a lineup face-down if you are observant enough. So it can be considered marked.
