this is similar to the other hydra combo floating around with {melira, sylvok Outcast } and {phyrexian hydra }, but the hydra gets stronger every time its damaged, and can block things much bigger than itself without fear.

It does, no? Hydra gets a perma 1/2 status with the mask, since they're not counters, and even if maximum damage is dealt, it's all prevented to take counters off, so no matter how much damage it takes.

And the other bonus of the mask is hexproof so they can't take it out without destroying the mask first. Also because damage is prevented this stops lifelink or deathtouch from working.

If you're looking to spice up the {Protean Hydra} even more after giving it extra toughness and making it damage-immune, give {Predatory Urge} a try and bring on the good times. Now making him bigger isn't your opponent's choice, it's yours! {Lure} works nicely too, max that damage coming at him.
