I have never built an EDH deck, but a friend of mine keeps pestering me. So I have done some research and I decided the commander and the basic concept of the deck.

My question is, when it comes to lands, what do you look to put into a deck? I can get the creatures/spells after more research, but the lands seem a tad more....important.

What you should do is take a look at the comprehensive guide at the top of the page. In there it discusses in detail about the most important non basic lands.  But the overall goal to is find you own balance of basics vs. non basics. Remember that there are advantages and disadvantages to having to many of either one. But as a guideline I would aim your mana base between 33 and 36 lands for a Kaalia deck. Hope this helps.
