If stab wound is in effect would a safe passage play at before the upkeep prevent the effect of stab wound?

{Stab Wound}
{Safe Passage}

Short answer, No.
Safe passage prevents damage.
Stab wound causes loss of life.
Loss of life is not necessarily damage.

Loss of life occurs at the upkeep anyways, which I'm pretty sure you can't cast spells in.

I thought so, but it was my wife who was playing safe passage and I needed help lol.

You can cast spells during the upkeep, since stab wound is a triggered ability, it can be responded to. So "in response to stab wounds ability on the stack, I cast safe passage" which as we have discussed, would be pointless. But can still be done.
Again, you CAN cast instants or activate abilities during upkeep.

So if the card read prevent all loss of life done to you this turn the triggered ability could have been avoided?

Not avoided, still would trigger, but replaced with nothing.

I was just reading the rulings for safe passage and it says it prevents all damage, not just combat damage. What distinguishes the two? Is it that all damage outside of combat is considered damage? Cause I was reading some text on other cards like  {Children of Korlis} where it says damage causes loss of life, so wouldn't loss of life be damage as well?

Hays413

Damage is damage is damage.
Damage dealt by creatures, through attacking, during the combat phase is "combat damage". Whether it be to creatures or planeswalkers or players.

Lose of life is not damage.

Cards like {Children of Korlis} have the reminder there to indicate that not only does "loss of life" caused by cards like {stab wound} count, but as does damage as well.

Bottom line, many things cause loss of life, damage, life total exchanges(if less than original life total), paying life, "lose of life", etc etc... But loss of life is not always damage.

...if any of that makes sense

You're thinking of the untap step ;) no player receives priority with which to cast spells or activate abilities during the untap step and the cleanup step.

Just thought I'd chime in and clarify that in case anyone was wondering about it.
