Well butterfly knives are more of a recreational/show off weapon...much like nun chucks. They are dangerous and can be used for defense, but they are more known for their unique properties, and the many cool tricks with them. You should look up "balisong tricks" on youtube.

As for them being illegal, it is because they have been wrongly classified as "switch blades" because of how fast one can flip them open. Movies/tv shows with gangsters that wield balisongs don't help. :(

I also intend to get a training balisong. Just a regular one with a blunt, fake knife so it is safe for practicing. I also want to get a pen-balisong that I can have fun with in class!

As for my decision, I decided to stop buying magic until I get clothes. After that, I will either get cards or the knife, whichever one I want more at that time.

Honestly hate that policy.  I carry around a pocket knife for utility.  I'm not gonna take a 2-3" blade and start mass murdering.  There's been several times at school that I wished I had my knife just to cut something open, or cut out a plant for biology, etc.

If you need to cut something for a class, that tool should be provided for you for that task. There's no need for you to be carrying a knife on a schoolyard.

Kids are kids. We all know what school is like, there's bullies, there's schoolyard fights, there's teasing, etc etc. You add a knife to the equation, a simple schoolyard scuffle can turn into a dead teenager, and a family missing its child. Add to the mix the hotheadedness that this generation seems to have an abundance of...nothing good comes of it.

Use scissors. ✂ Just as lethal, not banned

True, however, the HS that I go to is fairly underfunded and money is divvied out ridiculously poorly, and for things like biology, we would have to stab a thick plant with a shovel for around 20 minutes because there was nothing else we could use.  I cut a quarter of a medium evergreen tree down at my house with my knife in about 5 minutes :-\

But, you're right.  People are just too gung-ho about fighting that they'd pull their knife just to try to look like the bigger, stronger person.  They gotta ruin it for everyone :P

Pen balisongs are not knives in any way; they just open like a balisong so you can have flipping practice. But thanks for the warning...I was going to bring my hunting knife to show and tell this week, along with my AK. :p
