If a card says instants or sorccery cost 1 less to play. Does that count for cards that cost one mountain or whatever? I mean can you use it for a land of a certain color?

D3g3n

If it says one (like older cards) or have a colourless one mana symbol, it is referring to one colourless less.
If it were for a particular colour, it will say one less [colour] to cast (or have the mana symbol).

BlackJester

A {2}{R} would cost {1}{R}.
A {R} will still cost {R}.

Kaleo42

Jester, can you explain what alternative costs are effected by these effects. Such as miracle, kicker, {X} costs, etc.

BlackJester

All.

When determining how much mana you pay for the spell you take the initial cost  + additional costs (kicker, {Thalia, Guardian of Thraben}) - reductions.

Alternate costs that don't require mana are unaffected by reductions (giving life with {Invigorate}).

The cost can't be reduced below {0}, and colorless reductions cannot lower colored costs. {Geth's Verdict} still costs {B}{B}.

Lespend

I'm throwing a wrench out... {sphere of resistance}... This I completely different right? I run {grand Arbitor Augustine the IV} as my general and the sphere makes me pay another colorless mana when my general is in play right even if with the mana reduction in example when I cast {enlightened tutor} I would pay 2?

Lespend

I mean I would pay 1 white and 1 colorless?

BlackJester

To figure out what you have to pay, you take the original cost ({W} in your example), add additional costs (+{1} for the sphere). Then subtract deductions (-{1} for your Arbiter).

This gives a total of {W}+{1}-{1}={W}.

That's it.

Lespend

I hate it when judges argue with me about this... I was told that the additional cost is applied after all "initial costs" are determined... So you pay the cost of the spell then pay the additional costs... I explained it the same way you did and he ruled that I was wrong...

Would this one less to cast effect Replicate costs?

not each replicate cost if that is what you're suggesting. it'll take one away from the total casting cost.

How does it work for a miracle? Could I get another angel?
