Favorite play was when my friend decided he would {Clone} it. Ahhhh the look on his face.
Wait wouldn't it die because it has no counters?

I like the Hydra more too...because its the only one I have LOL

Thragtusk punishes you for killing or bouncing it. Primordial invites it

The best way's to win with this card is {ascetism} to make it an ever growing {thrun, the last troll}, or fight club it with a {stuffy doll} essentially making it unblockable damage. (same idea with {fling}).

Another green one I like is {Elderscale Wurm}

Epic win with hydra:

Play hydra. Next turn opponent plays {pacifism} targeting hydra. Two turns later {fling} hydra for 36. Look on opponents face = priceless 

I like the hydra. My favorite thing about it is that it's useful no matter when you play it. Early in the game it doesn't cost you much but can turn into a very formidable threat. Late in the game, if you have a lot of mana, it comes in big, doubles next turn, and can swing for the win.

It can easily be taken out, but I don't think it's such a huge drawback. A lot of times your opponent will feel obligated to use their counter/removal on the hydra, allowing something else of yours to survive. Also, if your opponent doesn't have an immediate answer, it puts them on an ever accelerating clock, forcing them to be defensive or find an answer instead of building up threats.

In order to maximize its effectiveness you do need ways to protect it, or minimize its removal. I like running a couple {flings} with it, that way when my opponent kills it I just fling it and laugh. Throw in a few {increasing vengeance}s and you can do insane damage for the mana it costs you. I also like to use {increasing savagery} to really accelerate its growth and get trample faster.

So yes, there are drawbacks, but I still think its a great card if you can figure out how to use it.

Aye, it was great my friend and I were playing and I was running a different deck than my elf mana ramp and he pacified my hydra and forgot about it and I topdecked a fling a while into the game and hit him for 128
