So let's say I play rite of ruin(choose an order for artifacts, creatures, and lands. Each player sacrifices 1 permanent of the 1st type, 2 of the 2nd, 3 of the 3rd type.) but no artifacts are in play. Can I still play it?

So what if I play indrik stompdweller(when indrik stomp dweller enters the battlefield, destroy target artifact or enchantment.) can he still be played without an artifact or enchantment in play?

If you want to say a card {indrik stompsweller} (quote this message to see curly brackets)

Yes you can still play him. You don't have to destroy an artifact for him to come into playz

To clarify, you do have to destroy a target artifact when it comes into play, because the ability does not say "may." when it enters, choose a target. If there are none, that's fine, the ability resolves, and the creature is in play. However if the only artifact or enchantment in play is under your control, I'm afraid you will have target it, because the creature has to target something if possible.

It's important to keep manditory vs "may" triggers sorted out. I think everyone has screwed themselves over because of it at least once. Like casting {Aether Adept} with no other creatures on the battlefield. Oops, Just wasted a turn!

It wasn't part of the question. He was asking if it was a requirement for casting the creature which it is not.

OP, Gorzo is right though. Make sure you read the text of the card carefully.
