Elder cathar

Silly question but say I play {Elder Cathar} and my opponent {Cancel}s him.  Does his ability still go on the stack for if he dies put a +1/1 counter on creature you control if it's human 2 counters.  Maybe I'm answering my own question but {cancel} is just countering him not killing him right?
