I like the hydra. My favorite thing about it is that it's useful no matter when you play it. Early in the game it doesn't cost you much but can turn into a very formidable threat. Late in the game, if you have a lot of mana, it comes in big, doubles next turn, and can swing for the win.

It can easily be taken out, but I don't think it's such a huge drawback. A lot of times your opponent will feel obligated to use their counter/removal on the hydra, allowing something else of yours to survive. Also, if your opponent doesn't have an immediate answer, it puts them on an ever accelerating clock, forcing them to be defensive or find an answer instead of building up threats.

In order to maximize its effectiveness you do need ways to protect it, or minimize its removal. I like running a couple {flings} with it, that way when my opponent kills it I just fling it and laugh. Throw in a few {increasing vengeance}s and you can do insane damage for the mana it costs you. I also like to use {increasing savagery} to really accelerate its growth and get trample faster.

So yes, there are drawbacks, but I still think its a great card if you can figure out how to use it.

Increasing savagery is a great idea!! Use that on first turn you play this and wow

The hydra is great with {doubling season} but my favorite use for him is in my EDH deck. Copy him with {the mimeoplasm} with the counters of {death's shadow}.

😳😳😳😳😳 must include combo!!!! That's insane. Ive been looking for a good combo for mimeoplasm. I use the hydra as the base usually combine with {it that betrays}. Because it can automatically win games if it's not killed by the next turn.

Coffee Vampire

I remember when I was just starting out in magic, my brother and I played a game where we let primordial hydra get so big that it was a phone number. We called the number and it wasn't a real number. Oh well lol

Death's shadow is a perfect card because even if you draw it, it puts itself in the graveyard right away!

This deck here abuses {primoridal hydra} more often then the creature the deck was built around......{slumberring dragon}

{Primordial Hydra} is even better when enchanted with {Swiftfoot Boots}

But the absolute best green card from M13 has to be {Bond Beetle}!

Watch out for {switcheroo} or cards of that like if you are using hydra -_-"

Desolatus

I use P. hydra in my {Animar} EDH deck. His counters make hydra supah big.
