Umm ive watched a couple vids on it. In mho it doesnt look worth the money. Half the time u just walk around looking for food and guns. And very rarley see other ppl unless u go out of your way to find them.

Maybe they're trying to make it more realistic?  Military Sim?

Let me tell you all about Day Z.

Day Z is a mod for the military simulator ARMA 2, which came out like three years ago. The game is unwieldy, realistic to a fault and very difficult.

Day Z places you at a random point along the southern coast of a huge, persistent (per server) map set in a fictional eastern european country called Chernarus. You're given a flashlight, a box of painkillers to heal the Pain status effect and a bandage to heal the Bleeding effect. You have 12,000 Blood to start, that's your HP.

Day Z then simply tasks you with surviving. You have to quietly crawl, sneak and sometimes run throughout the whole map, finding towns with buildings to loot. Guns are uncommon. Guns that won't get you killed are rare. Ammo is pretty plentiful though. But if you get spotted by some zombies, get ready to run because if they catch you, they'll hit you for 300-500 blood a pop, very fast. But the worst part is the status ailments. Bleeding? Lose 50 blood a second until you use a Bandage, which you have to kneel down and sit still for 10 seconds to use. In Pain? Your aim is too shaky to hit the broad side of a barn until you find some painkillers. And if you break a bone? Sorry, but you can only crawl until you find an ultra-rare morphine injectors.

The game is brutal, unforgiving, and destroys your faith in humanity as every single person you meet either kills you or attempts to screw you over however they can. I've met six people in total so far in this game, and each one I tried to communicate with responded with bullets. Two of them just killed me when they saw me, and one man, unarmed, freshly spawned with nothing on him, decided that his response to me NOT killing him instantly (something apparently very common) should be to steal all the spare supplies I had in my backpack while my back was turned because for some reason that's possible.

This game is the most fun thing i've ever played while simultaneously being the worst and most depressing. It's still in, like, alpha, and i can't wait to see where it goes but jesus christ, i hope you don't mind dying and losing everything every time you meet someone with a better gun.

I really want to play DayZ, but I don't really want to pay $30 on steam for it.  I couldn't care less about Arma, I just want the mod.  $30 for a mod just seems too expensive.

They are planning on releasing a standalone I think..... It is very good though :) but unforgiving yes and no end game content yet. It does get boring :-/
