So I'm listening to Monday night magic, and they are talking about some big tourney. Where a player took 101st place using a battle wits/birthing pod deck, the deck list is on starcitygames.
Taking a 101 finish out of a couple of hundred in standard
Did the same in legacy.
TL/DR.  Home brewing can be competitive.

Bow is cool but it will never win a standard pro tour.
Tourneys like this maybe however straight up burn or mill will beat it and since you really only have one win-con you are vanurable.

101st with the worst deck ever? I feel bad for those other guys. Was it 101/102? 1 guy DQ'd?

{Battle of Wits} is, and always will be, horrible. It's only period of viability was odyssey when it had more tutors. Even then it was terrible.

It's the single worst card to draft, undoubtedly. It is absolutely the worst rare in this set, and it is a total buzz kill to open a pack and see this card.

Wizards should really be ashamed of reprinting this. It took the spot of a card infinitely cooler, which is anything.

Mikefrompluto

I was so mad when I pulled this as the rare in a booster. Worthless.

AgrusKos

Was my stick once. I also got one from picks to humor myself

Dudecore

{Vizzerdrix} is a better rare. Because he does something. It's cooler to win with a {Vizzerdrix}, and more insulting, then dropping a stupid {Battle of Wits}.

I get it's a "different" wincon, cool... Useless. There is a gigantic stack of at least 50 {Battle of Wits} at my LGS, all undrafted.

You ladies and gentleman have no sense of adventure. {battle of the wits} is meant for fun and group play. Im sorry that wizard prints stuff for everyone instead of just for you. I hope you realize magic doesnt revolve around you.

Dudecore

I'm willing to accept inferior cards on behalf of Timmy's. There are plenty of those in this set too (see: {Trading Post}, {Door to Nothingness}). {Battle of Wits} has gone too far.

Lol why you so serious dude?

Cindjor

Sounds like everyone else is just knocking battle of wits. Dunno what you're trying to say.

My friend topped 8 at 7 in a 60 person FNM with a {trading post} deck lol, also so a really good artifact control deck using them.

Too far?  Wow.

Dudecore

It took a blue card out, and a rare card. They could have used the spot to debut the new rare version of {Mind Control}, because for drafting reasons MC is too powerful at uncommon. Or 1 billion other things

Timmy's get plenty of cards, so do spikes and everyone else. {Battle of Wits} already has its printed run, it has it's place in history. If its for "fun and adventure", then just use the Odyssey version, what's the purpose of reprinting it?

Dudecore

And by Timmy's I mean johnnies

BlackJester

Because sometimes they've got to print extremely polarizing cards. They get new players excited. They give Johnnies impossible hills to climb (the "I DARE you to build around me!" cards).

Lastly, because for every piece of 💩 card you don't like pulling makes every 💎 card shine brighter when you get it.
