Should {Belbe's Portal} read "choose creature sub type" instead of "creature type"?

I bring this up because if I played this, could I choose "artifact creature" or would I have to choose the subtype such as "golem" or "sphinx"?

"Artifact Creature" is a card type not a creature type.  So you would choose the subtype like you said, ie, Human, Vampire, Golemn, etc.
