Ok so {wild defiance} is in play and I target my 1/1 creature with {sheltering word} do I gain 4 life?

The main thing to remember with wild defiance is that it's when a creature is targeted. Not when the spell resolves.

Hold that thought, so according to the stack doesn't the buff go on the stack first then then the sheltering word? Therefore the sheltering word would resolve first right?

You are right that it uses the stack. But, the Wild Defence doesn't get put on the stack until after the other spell is put on the stack first. So WD will be the last one on top.

If sheltering ward isnt on the stack yet there is nothing to trigger wild defiance. The spell first goes on te stack with a target and then triggers are checked and added to the stack.

I'm not too sure what's the technical way to explain it (and I'm hoping someone does) but for some reason wild defiance activates after targeting

correct therefore it resolves before sheltering word.

Untechnically what happens is a spell goes on the stack targetting your 1/1
Only when on the stack does the spell target because anywhere else its not in play and alas not targetting anything.

Technically, any ability that triggers while something else is happening will wait until the next time a player gets priority. At that time, triggered abilities will be put on the stack.
