You have to teach it properly also. You can't just throw everything out there at the same time. When I taught my lady it was with extremely simple mono colored decks to get a feel for the game, and after that was established, I introduced more mechanics, abilities, taught her what the stack was, and she got super into it with me. Obviously, Magic isn't for everyone though.
