Doug Beyer has stated that Ashiok's gender is unknown because Ashiok chooses not to define Ashiok's identity that way. Ashiok is often referred to with male pronouns, but that's because characters assume that Ashiok is male and because English generally defaults to using male pronouns when gender is in question.

Yeah I saw the a few people have a older uid than me, it makes me happy to know there are still some og people here. Yeah jester was one of the coolest guys to ever come to this app. He is truly missed here. Among many others. We have lost a lot of really awesome people for different reasons.
