 {Spinerock Knoll} has me a bit confused.
It lets you "play" the exiled card, but does this mean you could cast a sorcery at instant speed, or do timing restrictions still apply?

I get why "play" is used, since you could exile a land, which is not cast, but could someone supply a ruling?

Timing still applies
So if you tucked a sorcery, you could only play it during your turn (unless you had a {Vedalken Orrery} out)

Timing does not apply.  The effect instructs you to play the card then, bypassing timing restrictions.

Is this due to the wording "you may play this card if....."
thus allowing a sorcery to be cast any time as long as the requirement is fulfilled (in this case someone was dealt 7 damage?)

It's because it's part of the ability resolving. It doesn't say you may play it Until End of Turn.

10/1/2007   At the time the last ability resolves, you'll get to play the card if a player who is currently your opponent, or a player who was your opponent at the time he or she left the game, has been dealt 7 damage over the course of the turn.

So {kheru spellsnatcher}, {villainous wealth}=instant speed.
{commune with lava}, {abbot of keral keep}=played card's speed. Correct?

I guess VW has the has the distinction to KSS of that they must be played upon resolution

So you're all good except for {kheru spellsnatcher}. It doesn't give you the ability to cast it when it normally couldn't be cast. As long as the card is exiled and you control the snatcher (because it's the one allowing you to cast it from exile) you may cast it when it normally could be cast. If it dies, you can no longer cast it.

Edit: as long as the spell is exiled you can cast it. It's not tied to the snatcher. Sorry and thanks rem!

The Snatcher actually doesn't care about staying on the battlefield.  Otherwise it'd say "you may cast that card as long as it remains exiled and you control Kheru Spellsnatcher".  Compare it to Spelljack (which it literally is).

Thanks {{remilllo}}. Here's a ruling from {fiend of the shadows} who has similar wording.

1/22/2011   As long as the card remains exiled, you may still play it, even if Fiend of the Shadows leaves the battlefield or changes controllers.
