When Formats Push Other Formats

currently annoyed at my main lgs, finally got a Wednesday legacy night established and now they decided to hold draft also. They already draft thurs, Friday (killed FNM standard) & Sunday.

Their logic is : different players different formats.

My problem is this: having two formats on the same night equates usually to one format being pushed aside. Constructed players don't really have a place here anymore. People chose often to draft as they didn't have the standard deck they wanted or didn't want to put a standard Deck together. Why should other formats suffer for drafting? This already ruined standard for me.

I should mention this is in Los Angeles where parking is limited also, another factor that is important

Does this happen to any of you?

The reverse happens here-I like playing constructed but there are never any draft pods able to form because they happen on the same night. Although Standard and Modern happen on the same night and neither suffers.

It has started something kinda odd at my lgs. They started hosting a draft between 6:30 and 7:30pm. This became a huge problem as we would get maybe 12-14 people some times. if draft had enough interest it would start before standard fnm. This happened alot cause there was a group of veterns who really liked draft that would be 4-6 people.
The issue is there would be people eager to play so they would draft or not many people to start with so at times fnm would not launch cause my lgs requires like 8 to launch a fnm but 6 for a draft. So i would show up. And if draft started i just started leaving cause at that point I knew there would not be fnm that night.

Luckly (unluckly?) another location closed so my store now has fnms with around 30 people at times. And now runs two fnms, one a 3, another at 7. The 3pm one is normally smaller at about 10-12 people so i normally do that.

Tldr: it nearly killed fnm at my place for like 2 months.

My old Los would start for and than 3 rounds in they start draft, it's for the people that quit so they have something to do

Before my lgs closed they started having a casual Wednesday. We pushed that into modern which got pushed into kiddie casual cause no one wanted to spend a bunch on modern to compete with tron, twin, jund and whatever top tier stuff we were playing

The worst thing for legacy is people think it's very expensive. Saving money and trading up is hard?

It's usually hardcore standard people that say legacy is expensive too. Oh, the irony.

I think it is cause legacy is looked at by it's plays as. Sure my deck might cost hundreds or thousands but once it is more or less done i won't have to spend anymore on it ever again.

Standard players look short term. My deck only cost a few hundred for the most expensive stuff. The issue is they have to keep replacing their deck over and over.

$20 every week on an idea that doesn't work on your local meta :P

My LGS runs draft every Friday. This is the first month that is running constructed in addition to draft at FNM. I've been out of town so not sure how the balance is, but seeing as the next closest modern is like over an hour away (and draft for that matter), I'll take it.

I've actually found that the big issue with legacy is the lands and cards like {Force of Will}. Those are the biggest price barriers. Once you get past that it's actually really easy to get into the format.

They seem daunting but searching and aggressive trading get you what you want.

Trading up? Throw in an extra shock land or KTK fetch for the FoW or dual. An extra $10-$20 in trade will get you an item that will stand firm in price. Sure some may not be mint, but once you get 4, you're good :)
