MTGO allows {rancor} in pauper.  However, the paper rules are silent on this topic.  I'd check the event specific rules.  If it's just amongst friends, talk about it.

Casual paper Pauper is not sanctioned by DCI or Wizards and you can play with whatever you want as long as it is a common or was a common at one point on paper.
