Ok let's say I have random creature in play. I now summon {elgaud shieldmate} and I am pairing the two. Can he be targeted and killed with a dd spell before?

You can't destroy a creature in response to the act of soulbonding, because it is not an activated ability. And you couldn't do it after the soulbonding because both would have hexproof. But you could destroy the creature already on the field in response to a player casting the Elgaud.

Actually...now that I really think about it, soulbonding might be activated. The text says "when" it enters the battlefield, and not "as" it enters the battlefield. So it makes me wonder if there is a space that you could do stuff in between the time he enters the battlefield and is soulbonded.

I'll still stick to what I said first though because I am almost sure of it.

soulbond is a triggered ability which goes on the atack and can be responded to.

Dudecore

If his ability is on the stack, and you have 1 creature on the battlefield and someone kills it, when Shieldmate enters the battlefield he doesn't bond with anything.

I don't care about the other creature I just want to know if the shield mate can be killed

Wouldn't he have to wait for the spell to resolve before he could target the shield mate. Therefore the soulbond would have resolved as well. Giving both creatures hex proof.

resolving the soulbond trigger and elgaud's casting are not simultaneous. only once elgaud enters the battlefield does soulbond trigger and while soulbonding is on the stack you can respond with just about any instant speed anything you can pay for.
