if my opponent activates {proteus staff} targeting my {Marath, will of the wild}, and in response, I remove all the counters from marath, so that he dies, what happens?

Marath dies and leaves the battlefield, so Proteus doesn't have a legal target anymore and fizzles.

It might be worth it to leave a counter on to still get something new

Not fully related, but I noticed the staff is legal in Commander... Must be the most hated card in EDH, since you can tuck all commanders?

Yeah it's a fun card but you need to be careful because unlike  {Chaos Warp} It won't fizzle you will get a creature and if they have big stuff you might give them something huge that's worse then their commander lol

Combine with something that puts an innocent {goblins of the flarg} on top :)

Does it fizzle? The staff targeted the creature when the effect went on the stack. Doesn't the rest of the effect try to do as much as it can still?

No. It only has one target. If that target is invalid when staff tries to resolve, then the whole effect goes pffttt

And this is why you play French.

I play it to tuck a friend's {hound of isumaru} EDh deck, Where he only plays 4 creatures. He was playing my own deck against my {Marath, will of the wild} tokens to help me play test.
