Can you {cloud shift} a creature targeted by {combust}?

Jake, Fart Sculptor

I want to say the combust fizzles because it technically is targeting a creature that no longer exists but I could be wrong, if this does work, than my new UW control deck will work better than I thought.

BadLuckIrish

yes because ur not countering (in a way). Your removing an object from play which will leave combust targetless.

But you're preventing the damage.

Ok lets say like this. Enemy cast combust.
Any shield would melt. No spell can touch it. But what you do is pick up your creature and put him down right next to where combust would hit.
Simply put.

BadLuckIrish

combust would have an illegal target (which would be no target at all) and thus fizzle out

You're not preventing. Cards like {Bandage} prevent damage
