Typically, it's a {Manalith}. Just an everyday mana rock.

What makes it specialist that it allows you to pay double or triple (or more I guess) to have it produce double or triple (or more) mana when you tap it.

It also has the ability to cast for {0}, which can be handy as a combo piece - {Ensoul Artifact}, trigger Prowess, increase anything that counts # of artifacts, or other such trickery.
