The stack is a game zone, much like the battlefield or your hand.  The weird thing about the stack is that it's where spells and abilities wait to resolve after they're cast, activated or triggered.  To do something while something else is 'on the stack' means to take a game action before that particular thing resolves and actually has its effect.  This works because objects added to the stack resolve in reverse order of how they got there, commonly referred to as 'first in, last out'.

If you need a deeper explanation, just let me know!

To go off of this, after the active player places an object on the stack, they can place any more objects on it before passing priority to the other player. The nonactove player then puts as many objects as he or she wants and then passes back priority. Once both players pass priority without putting any objects on the stack, the spell or ability on top of the stack ( the most recent one to be put on) resolves. As soon as it resolves, priority is passed back and more objects can be placed on the stack.

In addition besides the battlefield the stack is the only game zone where you control the objects, and it is where you can activate abilities like {niv magus elemental}
