My family has a "rule" where you can only use 6 rares and 12 uncommons so it levels the playing field. Is there a better way to make all of our decks equal?

Dudecore

Duels of the Planeswalkers has one mythic rare, two rares, three uncommon restriction.

Minimum of 60 cards, only 4 of each individual but basic lands?  If one deck tends to win all the time, just adjust your deck to specifically fight that deck.

uhhh thats just regular rules...

Play Pauper. It's a format where you can only use cards that have been printed at common.

My playgroup has no rules like that, and it works fine. We always play multiplayer so if somebody plays a powerhouse deck everybody gang beats them and they lose. It used to be B/W extort vs Mono black devotion, but people (cough me cough) played hate cards and people moved into other decks. The game is designed to be balanced. Find the weakenes and exploit it till they know not to use that deck.

Play with the standard legal releases. No m14, rtr, gtc or dgm. Just advice from the top of my head :)

That's my point.  The game is made to be equal.  Just metagame to take down the powerful decks.

Not really. I'll give you ten packs to make a deck from. I'll go thru a hundred packs and make a deck. Which one will win more often?

Then I spend $1 on commons to counteract your deck and we are equal.  :P
It does take a little money, but if you can't spend $5, magic is not the game for you...

Say you have a birthing pod deck.  I buy 4 {grafdigger's cage} and main board them.  Even if my deck isn't that good, it now has a much better chance to beat yours.

So true there is always ways to counter any deck. But from reading the original post I was assuming he is playing with his family who play casual and are trying to keep it a level playing field. Most casual players don't buy play sets. They pick up a few packs here or there.

Yup. U gots it. My mom needs it equal cause otherwise she flips out on random stuff. For example, one night she got mad because she claimed that she didn't know what the stack was and rage quit

Buy a few Dual Decks.  They're made to be balanced and play well against each other.  They use a lot of single cards rather than playsets so it leads to a different gaming experience each time.  It's perfect for family gaming.  Also cheap coming in at about $20 for both decks.
