Can someone explain to me the second ability and what it does (with an example), please.

Thanks

Essentially, you use it to turn it into another land on the battlefield, but it keeps that so you can keep doing that.

A prime example is if you have {Dark Depths} on the battlefield, you can use the Stage to turn it into dark depths BUT without counters, because it doesn't enter the battlefield as Depths for that to trigger.

People usually scoop when you do that :)

Doesn't that mean you can sacrifice it before the stack triggers an get the avatar right off back? Lolol

MuggyWuggy

well - as soon as it becomes a copy, the game does state based checks - there are no counters thespians stage, so you must sacrifice it and get marit lage

TreeSmoker

That's so fckd up dawg. I can see that making nobody friends :p
If you ever pull that off expect the worse to happen

The way you described it does not work. If the stage is sacrificed as a result of state based actions, you do not get the token. What happens is that you sac the {dark depths} due to state based actions. Then the stages ability kicks in "sacrifice if no counters". Then you get your big token.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the legend rule. Not entirely sure. But if there are two of the same legendary on the field you can sac the one with the counters on it then get you're token

If you sac the one with no counters, ie "the copy", due to the legend rule, you will not get the token. This is because of state-based actions and not because the "when" clause on the copy being fulfilled

But this is turning into another ruling question not really relevant to the OP

So, if I had {Grove of the Guardian} then  {Thespian's Stage} can become identical to that, with it's ability ( to tap creatures) and can still change to any other land later?

Yes.  Your  {Thespian's Stage} copying  {Grove of the Guardian} still retains the {2}{T}: Becomes a copy of target land and gains this ability.
Note: by using this ability,  {Thespian's Stage}, will overwrite what ever it was before. However, if you were using it as  {Grove of the Guardian} and used it's/Grove's ability, then you couldn't change it back since you have to sacrifice it as part of the resolution of making an 8/8 token.

Ah! I get it now. Thanks a lot everyone for contributing.

Did that this past weekend in an EDH match. Was so hilarious. Then the guy {Phyrexian Matamorph}'d it. All on turn 3. Was great.
