Obviously both are strong decks in the current standard, and they are keeping quite a few key cards, but will they have enough to survive past rotation, assuming they don't get much in Khans?

As long as there is {Gray Merchant of Asphodel} there will be mono black devotion. I've heard people predict that black devotion will actually pick up. As for mono blue I really don't understand it. Probably because I've never played with or against it.

Mono-blue is basically just a tempo or aggro deck featuring {Thassa, God of the Sea} and {Master of Waves}. Typically you will face something like: {Cloudfin Raptor}, {Frostburn Weird}, Thassa, Master as a curve to beat face. The only difference between this and a normal aggro deck is the emphasis on devotion, counterspell back-up, draw (especially through {Bident of Thassa}) and more late game capabilities.

mono black loses pack rat and nightveil and underworld connections and mutavault.  I doubt it'll be tier one.  but as long as there's merchant, there will be mono black devotion.

i agree. losing pack rat and mutavault is pretty huge, considering its one of the main wincons, and definitely feeds gary. mono blue will be fine but i think it will be a bit less aggro and maybe run prog sphinx.

Mono Blue has not been a big thing in my meta.  Black has had a much bigger impact.  A lot of it really depends on what is in the new set.  Will it be stuff that can replace the rat and Mutavault?  I doubt it.

Mono blue has been dead since JOU (deicide)

Not entirely, it has nerfed it, but it still wins Standard Dailies. It also has a chance past rotation as a tier two deck, if the meta changes up

DirtyMustachio

Monoblack loses a lot of key kill spells

More specifically
Devour flesh
Doom blade

Lifebane
Pack rat
Underworld connections
Mutavault
And desecration demon

So yeah...  Don't tell anyone I told you but monoblack is a control deck.

Someone will make a variant but it won't be nearly as powerful

I see potential in monoblack Aggro still however

Sounds like my kind of deck...the only mono blue deck I saw only had {Atherling} though. (For creatures) I can kinda see why though. I do have an {Atherling} so I guess I'll check out some builds. I'm assuming {Thassa's Rebuff} is a good counter for mono blue? I have a play set...

No one plays {Thassa's Rebuff}. It's too conditional and monoblue usually only plays like 4-8 counterspells. {Dissolve}, {Negate}, and {Essence Scatter} are your best bet.

blackychan1

Neither mono blue not mono black are played at my LGS, so i do not know the frustration of playing against them, but I think that many people will be glad if mono black gets shut down a bit.....

Silent1236

Hopefully both just die.  Forever.  So tired of seeing Mono B vs. Mono B.  I understand that it is a powerful deck, but ffs is it stale.

We still get T1 thoughtseize for another year at least :P

Enough of a reason for me to decide to not play standard for another year at least haha.
